![]() A Russells' customer's shade garden. A Tour of the Perennial Yard Our perennial yard is divided into sections for different types of plants. Our perennial experts will be happy to help you find the plants you need. In general, plants are located in alphabetical order by their Latin name within each section. Tall Sun: This is the largest section, in the center of the yard. It includes plants that love sun (and some that also tolerate part shade), and tend to grow taller than a foot. Peonies:
Russell's carries herbaceous and tree (woody) peonies. They arrive in April and May; this is when we have the best selection—over 50 varieties. Typically, more arrive in August, to plant in fall—prime planting time.
Varieties are grouped by color and alphabetized by variety name.
Vines:
Russell's has a huge selection of clematis, honeysuckle, wisteria, climbing hydrangea, akebia, and other vines for sun and shade.
We pride ourselves on our shade plant selection. We have the latest in blue Corydalis, Heuchera, Epimedium and Pulmonaria, as well as many native plants and ferns.
Visit the groundcover section, under the pergola, for more plants that thrive in part shade and full shade.
Hosta is one of the easiest perennials to grow. It is seen everywhere in the landscape, but very exciting things are still happening in this genus.
Come see the latest variegated Hosta, and the new blues, bred to stand up to slugs.
Look for Hosta in the shade section, arranged by color.
In this section are tiny alpines and other plants suited for a well-drained, sunny rock garden. Many of these plants are ideal for trough or container planting. Look here, too, for other diminutive plants for the front of the sunny border, and for the incredibly popular Stepables© collection for planting in pathways.
Starting in early May, Russell's carries many species of ornamental grasses. They add structure, whispery sound, and winter interest to your landscape. Visit the shade section to discover part- shade- loving grasses such as Carex and Hakonecloa. |

We carry a large selection of topsize summer-blooming bulbs, including many unusual varieties, and an expert staff to help you select bulbs that are right for your conditions. New VarietiesEach year, Russell's introduces hundreds of new perennial species and varieties to the extensive selection we already provide. We choose some for their improved qualities; others are new introductions from other continents, or natives that are new to the trade. Bamboo We are especially pleased to offer bamboo. We have a selection of hardy bamboo from four feet to 50, runners and clumpers. See descriptions on our Bamboo sheet. (Availability varies.)Special Collections
Campanula 'Chettle Charm',from Blooms of Bressingham Russell's is proud to offer special selections from some of the top growers in New England and the world. From Hillside Nursery come many rare woodland plants, native and exotic, including ladyslippers, Trillium, and Glaucium. Look for unusual, choice woodlanders in the Collector's Corner.
