VEGETABLES & HERBS

Vegetables & Herbs

(Seasonal Department)

Our vegetable growers at Russell's widen our selection each year to accommodate for the ever changing interest in local and sustainable food production. We offer certified organics, heirlooms, and conventional varieties.

Selections of fresh herb plants are available year-round at Russell's, but the widest variety of herbs are available in the spring and summer months. For more information about specific herbs ask our friendly staff. We will advise you about using the fresh herbs that you find at Russell's and grow on your own.

Seasonal Information

Spring is coming! We have vegetable seeds available now. In our area, lettuces and cool weather crops can be started in April, but most vegetables must wait to be planted outside until the threat of frost has passed, typically around Memorial Day. If you are interested in planting peas for the spring, you can obtain seed and pea inoculant in the Plant Shop and begin sowing it on St. Patrick's Day (March 17) The fall, when the weather begins to cool, is a second season for cool weather crops.

Sowing, Planting & Cutting Onions

Onion Care With Tracie

Come in to Russell's by the end March to purchase your 6 packs or pots of onion seedlings that have been started for you. Home gardeners should start onion seeds at the end of January to mid-February ideally under grow lights, trim when leggy.  Once thick enough and exposed to some cool temperatures, transplant into loose composted soil April 10th-15th about 3-4" apart, keeping evenly moist but not wet and feed regularly.
